Reflections on twenty years from CEO and Founder "Juicy Jay"

Q: How did you get started in the industry?

A: Long before JuicyAds, I was operating mainstream (non-adult) celebrity websites. I stumbled upon adult affiliate programs when searching for ways to monetize the website. My first adult websites failed but then I started acquiring TGPs and built a network.

Q: How did JuicyAds start?

A: Over time I realized my websites were making more money from advertising than affiliate earnings, and built JuicyAds to save time by automating it for my advertising clients. There are still weird codebase artifacts from the original system buried in the code. I knew pretty much everyone in my niche and someone asked me if I could sell their ads also (and take a percentage). Looking back, we were probably the very first adult advertising network before we went public in 2006, because what I built at the time didn't exist in the adult industry yet.

Q: When did you know this was going to be a full-fledged business, not just a way to monetize your own traffic?

A: Back then I wasn't trying to innovate, the earnings from running my friend's ads was peanuts and a waste of time. I just automated things for myself so I didn't have to do it. It wasn't until more people started to ask and I realized the software could monetize the entire industry.

Q: What was your first Industry Award and what did it feel like?

A: The funny thing about our first XBIZ award was that nobody was there to accept it! At the time we were the second-largest adult advertising network and didn't think we could win. The day after the ceremony I was reading the winners list on the XBIZ website. I was shocked, I had no idea we had won. I didn't get to touch the award until it showed up at my house a few months later.

Q: Who were your early role models in the biz?

A: Hefner. Always Hugh Hefner. Not because of the whole "Playboy" lifestyle or anything like that, but because he was the most well-known when I got started. I had the chance to hear Larry Flynt speak once, and only later realized how much he had done for the industry.

Q: What were your early struggles in getting the network launched?

A: Everything. As a self-taught programmer, I didn't know how to code like a professional, or how to scale databases or large multi-server networks. That all was learned the hard way. The business was launched with no outside funding or venture capital. Bootstrapping the business from the start forced us to be profitable from the very start which made it difficult to compete with other networks that were well-funded. But, many of them would go out of business over the years.

Q: What are your current struggles in the biz?

A: Our struggles are a reflection of the struggles of everyone else in the business (with a few extras). The last decade or so has seen several key issues take a bite out of the advertising industry: Google's monopolistic behaviour, the rise of ad blocking, privacy and data regulation, and age verification have all made advertising a much harder business to operate in. So we have to keep changing with it.

Q: Twenty years is largely unheard of in this business. What do you attribute your success and longevity to?

A: JuicyAds would not have survived without the resilient team we have, with an attitude of never giving up. There's been many times that we've had to change strategy or make tough decisions, but those changes made us better and stronger along the way. Always trying to do the right thing not just for us but for our Advertisers and Publishers also helps.

Q: What is the future of JuicyAds?

A: What’s next for us is evolution. With the launch of our new ad delivery engine, we’re moving from being an adult ad network to a performance and data platform. This is being built on decades of experience, first-party relationships, and smarter creatives. The industry is maturing, and we’re focused on building something resilient that can scale beyond adult while still leading it.

    “I originally joined Juicy in 2012 as an hourly support rep, thinking it would be a cool (but probably short-term) work from home gig. Fast forward 14 years, I'm now the COO and consider this team my second family.

    My first time meeting everyone in person was during a 2013 trip to Las Vegas, and coming from a corporate insurance background, which is about as uptight as it gets, it was quite the culture shock. There is nothing quite like an Internext Vegas show to make you realize that the structured world of insurance hadn't prepared you for everything in life!

    What I thought would be a short-term pit stop turned into a 14 year career defined by growth and genuine friendship. I didn’t just find a job, I found a team and a place to truly call home. We don’t just work alongside one another, we’ve navigated the highs and lows of this constantly changing industry together, building a level of closeness that you rarely find with any company. It’s been an honor to grow up alongside this group, and I’m incredibly proud of the history we’ve written together.”

And that shift made all the difference.”

One of the few times all of the staff had got to meet up, and it was an amazing 10 days. And...I even won a few quid in the slot machines!     On the other side of the pond at TES Barcelona went to one of the Champions League matches, which was on at Nou Camp, during that weekend (the timing for that show was perfect!) Watched Messi score five goals (his first time in any Champions League match), and it ended up a cracking 7-1 win for Barcelona. That's actually a sporting occasion I still talk about with friends to this day! These are just of a few of the many great memories I could mention during my years at Juicy! ”
